I took a philosophy class once and this question really got under my skin.
Are we in control of our lives or is eveything we do predetermined?
Think about this. You're sitting on your couch watching t.v. and you're contemplating eating an apple. With free will it will be completely up to you in the end if you eat the apple or not, but if fate does rule us all it is no longer a choice. Whichever way you decide, it was meant to happen that way. Therefor, was never your decision to begin with.
This topic of conversation came up the other day. It was spurred by a dream I had, which inevidably came true. (of couse not with absolute accuracy, but the main events held true.) William said to me "If you knew it was going to happen before it did, why didn't you do anything to prevent it from happening?"
This caught me off gaurd. I have always been a believer in the idea that if something was meant to happen a certain way, there is nothing anyone can do to change it.
I began really thinking about it, and what if the events of the day, which led to the police barricading our street, stopped a drunk driver from turning on to our street, and plowing down a child? Highly unlikely, I realize, but possible all the same.
Of the countless hours of debate I've had on this particular subject in my life, I have always taken fates' side. It somehow comforts me to know that whatever I do, is done for a reason. But what if I am wrong? what if we're all just floundering about, and there is no real control to it? What if everything that happens to us is a direct result of what we do, and there's nothing more to it than that?
