So, how does everyone feel about eating disorders? I ask because thats the hot topic of the week. (For those unfamiliar, erinbear and I choose a topic every week to discuss. Okay, biweekly, once a month, we're lazy girls)
It all came about like so. I was watching a very disturbing rerun of csi and I decided to phone erin to see how it went with the serial killer. (long story) The dead girl on csi was bulimic. You're all caught up.
So Erin and I get to talking. Are eating disorders for adolescent girls, or do we all suffer from some type of one in some way??
Look at all of the women out there who "diet". They count calories, go to the gym, are obsessed with dress sizes and numbers on scales, as if these numbers determine our self worth.
In recent years at least, I have noticed that it is not only women being weight and food conscious, but men as well. The other day erin phoned me (yes we talk too much) and told me she had just gotten off the phone with an ex boyfriend, and he was not only watching his weight, but counting calories!
Now this may seem like a reasonable thing to do, but stop and think about it. A hundred years ago, people ate to live. Weight was not an issue. A little weight on a woman was considered attractive because it was a sign of healthiness and wealth.
In the recent decades, women have become consumed with the thought of being thin. Young girls everywhere are starving themselves, forcing themselves to vomit, or becoming so depressed with their appearance that they become binge eaters.
Walking down the street, most of us will pass mannequins in stores wearing size one clothing, or billboards of waif like women. On tv we are bombarded with Jenny Craig and Weightwatchers, followed by a McDonalds commercial. No wonder everyone is so confused.
I saw a commercial for a weight loss supplement. The man actually said, "diet, excersize, and take these pills" What happened to the days when eating healthy and not being so god damn lazy (see previous post) was good enough.
Now men are following our lead. Little do they know we are leading them off the edge of a cliff. Something like 60% of Americans are overweight. I think it was 20% of women in their lifetime have or will suffer from some type of eating disorder. Who does that leave?
People no longer eat when they're hungry. People have somehow gotten confused and connected food to emotion. We need to learn to deal with our lives, not with our weight.
